Can’t Judge a Yogi by Their Pants

A lot of “serious” yoga practitioners, myself included, enjoy making of fun (and judging?) lululemon wearing yogis, but is this right? Is it any better than the hippy-yogi stereotype jokes? A stereotype that many of us fight—perhaps because it hits a little too close to home. It’s not fair to judge the lululemon wearing crowd--and by lululemon, I’m pretty much referring to all expensive, fancy yoga clothes. Besides, maybe the wearer got lucky and scored a pair secondhand. Just because someone is wearing lululemon doesn’t mean their interest in yoga is limited to achieving a yoga butt. Maybe they work hard for their money, working all day, and coming to yoga class is their only refuge and chance to experience a different way of being. Is it right then, for us to chastise them and make them feel uncomfortable in coming to perhaps the only environment that they can “let go” in?

Found you through Small is Beautiful. So happy to find you!

Yeah, I fall into this camp too and you're right, we shouldn't judge. I did score a nice pair of $$ yoga pants (not lulu, but still $80) through a studio once as a gift and I have to tell you, they were the most uncomfortable things EVER. Cute looking, sure, but uncomfortable enough that they (the pants) distracted me during my practice.

Looking forward to reading your blog.

you know, i am guilty of this one and i OWN lulu pants. I bought them while lulu was canadian owned and canadian made... and haven't bought new pants from there since. BUT my favourite tops are all , you guessed it, lulu. sigh.
you are right- i try not to judge. i should just stop going into that store, with the loads of lulu gaggles... saying inane things.

you are much more enlightened than myself, i think my next step is to admonish the automatic 'judge' thoughs that pop up... :)

I used to judge people who wore yoga brand names... until I tried the clothes myself, and found out how comfortable they are. I can't go back to regular old gym gear, which bunches or bulges and flips up during inversions. As my asana practice has intensified, I need to pay attention to waistbands and built-in bras.

I still find myself judging (and feeling envious of) people in the class fully decked out in this season's Lulus, while I wear the same old pilled and pulled pants that I've had for years (luckily they're reversible, so I can appear to have 2 pairs).

Shanti Mama: Welcome to my blog!

Eco-Yogini: I can assure you, enlightened I am not:)

Rosanne: I also own a pair of pants designed for yoga, and they are comfy. They're bamboo and I wear them all the time. I got them cheaply at Winners. I don't know what the brand is off the top of my head, but I couldn't find them online anyway, which is too bad, because I wish I had more.
